Everyone who visits the studio property comments o Everyone who visits the studio property comments on the espalier trees…. They’re a vibe, and we love them. Betsy has been training these trees for over twenty years, and they have become fixtures here. Espalier trees are basically just trees that are trained to grow flat. Pruning them is an art form to itself, a conversation between the trees and the human that creates a dynamic partnership. The key is starting early when the tree is still very young, and having an eye towards the future. They’re a long term investment! We grow them on our fences, which creates a lush, green boundary for the gardens. An added bonus? They produce lots of fruit! #fruittree #treepruning #espalier #garden #beauty

There’s one non negotiable thing you need to do if There’s one non negotiable thing you need to do if you want to keep your garden looking beautiful this summer. It can be hard to do, but it’s necessary, trust us. It’s cutting off full blooms, called deadheading. Annual plants are always focused on making more beauty - in their minds, the goal to reproduce and make new flowers. So as soon as the flowers begin to turn into seed heads, the plant figures its work is done and begins to shut down. To prevent this, it’s vital that you cut off flower heads that are maturing. This keeps the “I’m done!” signal from telling the plant it’s done its job. (There’s a few exceptions, so do a little research… but the vast majority of your plants will make new blooms if the old ones are cut off.) We get it…. It’s hard to chop off flowers that are a little wilted but still gorgeous. But trust us - you need to make room for what’s more.

We walk out in the morning and there is more than we planned for, that’s begging to be used. More color, more fragrance, more stems than our arms and souls can hold. This arrangement started the way the best ones do. Not with a plan, but with what was ready;what was asking to be cut.
