Every fall we decide, in the absence of proof, tha Every fall we decide, in the absence of proof, that beauty is coming. That the work is worth it. That the thing we can’t see yet is already, quietly, on its way.

That’s what planting is. A decision made entirely on belief in a beautiful future. We spend time in the dirt with something that looks like nothing and we choose to believe in what it’s going to become — not because we can see it, but because we’ve seen it before, and because beauty, in our experience, has never once failed to arrive when it was tended with enough patience and enough love.

We plant every fall with the same quiet certainty. The armfuls are coming. They always come.

We just have to want the roots enough to get there.

We have strong opinions and good instincts and a p We have strong opinions and good instincts and a particular kind of confidence that only comes from having done something long enough to trust yourself completely inside of it, and trust that the flowers won’t let us down.

Every once in a while we just decide to show that.

This was one of those times. No brief, no boundaries, no quiet voice in the back of the room suggesting we consider scaling back. Just the flowers and the space and the full, unedited expression of what Artis Flora looks like when it’s not holding anything back.

We let the installation be as large and layered and unedited as it was asking to be — because the most honest thing we know how to do is listen to what the work is telling us and then get out of its way long enough to let it become what it already knew it was.

We’re proud of this one. We’re not pretending otherwise. 😉

There’s something about a fall tradition that feel There’s something about a fall tradition that feels different from other kinds of plans. It doesn’t need to be organized or decided. It just happens because it always has, because somewhere along the way it became the kind of thing that marks time, that makes the season feel like yours, that you’d notice the absence of in a way that would take a while to name.

The apples. The cool air. The particular light of an October morning that makes everything feel a little more significant than it probably is and exactly as significant as it feels.

That friend already knows you’re going to send this. That’s the thing about the friend you have traditions with.

She was already thinking the same thing.

It doesn’t require a farm or a flower field or a p It doesn’t require a farm or a flower field or a particular kind of life that looks a certain way from the outside. It just requires a small, quiet rebellion against the part of you that has been convinced that faster is better and busier is more and the next thing is always more important than the thing you’re actually in.

Fall helps. Something about the season makes the rebellion easier — the cool air, the golden light, the way everything around you is visibly, beautifully slowing down without apology. The trees aren’t hurrying their turning. The morning isn’t rushing its arrival. The whole world seems to be making a case for presence over speed, and for once it feels reasonable to listen.

You don’t have to overhaul anything. You don’t have to move to the country or quit your job or grow your own flowers. You just have to notice, once today, when urgency is making a decision that doesn’t actually belong to it. And then, gently, take that decision back.

Our bouquets are different now. Fuller in a differ Our bouquets are different now. Fuller in a different way than summer — less about abundance and more about warmth, about the particular richness of colors that only arrive when the air starts to cool and the light starts to angle itself differently through the rows.

We love this season here. The pace of it. The way the mornings ask you to linger a little longer over your coffee before heading out. The way the garden feels like it’s finally exhaling after giving everything it had all summer long.

Pull up a chair. Stay a while. Fall at Artis is worth settling into.

We bring the hands and the eye and the quiet willi We bring the hands and the eye and the quiet willingness to listen. They bring everything else — the color, the weight, the particular way a stem wants to lean and what it’s asking to lean toward. You learn to hear it after a while. The flower that wants more room. The one that’s been waiting to be placed next to that one, specifically, and no other.

The best arrangements are never designed. They’re negotiated. A slow, unhurried back and forth between what you imagined and what the flowers are actually telling you they want to become. You propose. They respond. You adjust. They settle. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, something emerges that neither of you could have arrived at alone.

That’s what we love most about this work. Not the finished thing, beautiful as it is, but the conversation that made it. The listening. The willingness to be changed by what you’re holding.
